Cayman Islands Car Rental
Discounts & Deals on Cars, Jeeps, Vans & SUVs at Grand Cayman Airport
The local travel experts at GoCayman know how this can feel
(We are travelers too!) and so, we put
together this comprehensive guide to help you find the best deals and discounts
for car rentals in the Cayman
Islands. If you are looking for an
economy car, 4-door mid-size sedan, spacious SUV, or want to feel the wind in
your hair in a convertible jeep, just tell us your travel dates and vehicle
preference, and we will shop around and provide you with a quote for the lowest
rates on the island.
With so many rental car companies here claiming to have the
cheapest rates, best selection of new cars and "great customer
service", searching through multiple travel websites for quotes and
comparisons can become quite tedious. We
simplify the rental process and provide better value for your money, plus give
you helpful tips to getting around the island and choosing the right type of
vehicle for your transportation needs.
Helpful Tip: If your flight is late and arriving after the
car rental agency closing hours, whenever possible, call the rent-a-car company
to let them know you may be later than expected. They may ask you to take a cab
to your hotel and then arrange to pick you up the following day. All companies
provide this type of free shuttle service.
The Road Code Roundabout video shows the proper way to
approach the many Roundabouts found throughout Grand Cayman. These are designed
to facilitate the smooth flowing of heavy traffic areas, especially in George
Town. Unfortunately, since these types of traffic flow controls are not
extensively used in North America, they can be quite confusing to visiting
drivers not familiar with driving on the left side of the road.
You will be pleased to find one of the best maintained road
systems in the Caribbean with clear signage and courteous drivers (yes, folks
here will actually stop and let you into traffic with a wave). Getting around Cayman is easy. Whether it's
your first visit or you are a seasoned Caribbean traveler you will find that
the island boasts one of the best-maintained road systems of any tropical
vacation destination. Cayman motorists
are known for their courtesy so you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it
is to get a break when trying to turn into traffic. Nevertheless there are some
significant differences between driving in Cayman and back home. (More on that
below under DRIVING TIPS). If you want
to be extra sure about local Laws and Regulations, checkout the Legislation
page from the Cayman Islands Department of Vehicle and Driver's Licensing, with
downloadable pdf versions of the pertinent laws.
You will need a Visitor's Driving Permit if you intend to
drive in Cayman (one-time charge, valid for six months or duration of stay,
whichever is shorter). These mandatory driving permits are issued for US$20
each from police stations and rent-a-car companies to holders of valid driver's
licenses. If you have a valid International Driver's License you are exempt
from this requirement.
Most places you want to visit are "nearby", but
not necessarily quick or easy to reach. Grand Cayman is only 22 miles long and
8 miles wide. However, the main road runs through many little towns (locally
called Districts) where the speed limit is only 25 mph. So, if you need to
drive to George Town from East End you should give yourself about 40 minutes,
30 minutes from Bodden down and one hour from Rum Point. But, no worries, it's
a beautiful drive and you'll be on island time, 'mon'.
